Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance1 is a benefit that comes with your membership on most American Express Cards, at no additional cost to you. The damage to or theft of a rental vehicle benefit is secondary to other sources of insurance or indemnity.

Premium Car Rental Protection2 is an optional fee product that can enhance the coverage that comes with your Card with primary coverage for damage to or theft of the rental vehicle, Accidental Death & Dismemberment benefits, and secondary medical and secondary personal property coverage.
It takes approximately 15-20 minutes depending on the complexity of your accident (i.e. multiple vehicles, other parties involved, etc.) Having a copy of your Car Rental Agreement/Contract, Personal and/or Business Insurance information and the Police Report available will assist in making the process quicker
As an immediate next step, we will work with the Car Rental Company to obtain the documentation we need from them. We will send you periodic updates on your claim via email or through the mail.
If the Car Rental Company has already charged your card for damages, please contact us at 1-800-338-1670 so you can file a claim immediately.
If the Car Rental Company has incorrectly charged your card for damages, please reach out to us by calling the number on the back of your card to set up a dispute.
It takes an average of 45 days to receive a final decision. For rentals occurring Internationally, it could take up to 60-90 days depending on the Car Rental Company responsiveness and/or severity of accident.

Coverage is determined by the terms, conditions, and exclusions of the Policies applicable to your Card and is subject to change with notice. This document does not supplement or replace the Policies. Coverage applies for the first 30 days of a vehicle rental and when rented from a Car Rental Company. Coverage is not available for ride-sharing companies that allow individuals to rent out their personal vehicle. This policy does not cover some vehicles, e.g. off-road vehicles, limousines and antique cars as described in the Terms and Conditions. This product provides secondary coverage. This means it pays eligible benefits not paid by any primary insurance that you have. This product provides collision damage to the rented vehicle but does not cover such things as damages to other vehicles or property.
